Ok, this is a little biased. I’ve been a devoted Smartwool Snowboard sock lover for the last 5 years. I’m always in search for the perfect warm, dry, non-itchy and knee high wool sock that doesn’t require a liner. I was given a pair of the Bridgedale Snowboard socks to test recently… LOVE THEM!
I welcome you to the second phase of womenspecific.com. Since our launching of Phase 1 this past June many exciting things have happened. We have tapped into the women’s outdoor industry in numerous ways. We have seen humorous reviews of the gear we love, we have gained information on different aspects of the sports we obsess about through blogs and articles, and we have begun to create an incredible resource of camps, clinics, and retreats for the various adventures we seek.
We all have a story of why we love the outdoors and I want womenspecific.com to be that outlet. Here are some new features on our site:
As I sit here preparing for my certain death on a plane ride to Florida, I will be thankful for the ground. It is amazing that I will throw myself down a mountainside on a 45 lb mountain bike, but each time we hit turbulence I yell out OH GOD for all to hear. Every time I am on an airplane I truly feel like I am going to die.
When I walked into my local gear shop and asked why they did not have any women’s Bridgedale socks on the wall the response was beyond anything I expected to hear:
What makes a women’s sock women’s specific anyway? Does the sock support your boobs? Is there a little side pocket that you can store a tampon? I just don’t get it!
At age 32, this is quite possibly the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I’ve been sedentary since the end of January 2005 and I’m looking at staying that way through March of 2006. It’s a long and twisted story, but the short of it is: I hurt my back at the end of January and then finally, at the end of May, when I was starting to recover, my hips gave out. So now I’ve had one hip replaced and the other is scheduled for the same surgery soon.
I had a total breakdown of spirit today on a backcountry ski tour. My skin glue decided to totally fail and completely stick to the base of my skis. I tried to point the skis straight downhill but I barely moved. I was so bummed out. It was like the end of the world for me. Can you believe that? Just because my ski day failed, I truly felt like life in general was failing. What a loser I am. This loser feeling only increased when I got home and one of my board women, Kelly Chadwick, submitted this article: Enjoy the Journey. A double hip replacement? Yeah…I can only hope that I would have the same courage and passion if faced with the same fate as Kelly. You go girl!
”I’ve been reviewing a couple different pairs of Schoeller pants for Womenspecific.com,” is what I said tonight at dinner with a few friends.
”Shoulder pads?” my friend Ian asked, a puzzled look on his face and god knows what was going through his head.
”No…Shoeller pants,” I again said, trying to enunciate my words better.
We cleared it up, but I keep laughing at another friend’s comment….”All I could picture was the women’s hockey team.”
(Carbondale, CO) C.A.M.P USA, a Colorado based climbing gear manufacturer, recently announced that a portion of the proceeds from sales of their turquoise Startech helmet will benefit the HERA (Health, Empowerment, Research and Advocacy) Women’s Cancer Foundation. The longtime supporter of HERA will also make an additional financial contribution to the non-profit, which is dedicated to funding ovarian cancer research and raising awareness of the disease.
My name is Rochelle. Right now the year is 2005 and I’m 39 years old and a single mom of two boys who are currently ages 8 and 12. I work full time as a registered dietitian and graphic design/promotions coordinator. While I am absolutely crazy about my sons, this story is about my newly found passion. I ride a freestyle BMX bike – ramps, jumps, peg stalls, and more – and I love it! It’s my moving meditation.
The classic “first ski day of the season” begins back at my house. Luckily I was heading out alone and nobody was waiting for me. I must have ran back and forth from the garage to the spare room in my house 10 times before I found all of my gear.
Ok Ok Ok I am a hat lover. Paying attention to all the details of a comfortable, practical, quality piece of head gear is paramount here in the mountains. I donne my crown first thing in the morning before the coffee hits my lips.
This was my mantra this morning as I tried to accomplish the basic things you do when you get up. You know…get out of bed, go to the bathroom, brush your teeth, walk to the kitchen. This mantra helped pilot my legs, sore from ski fitness class, through my morning routine.
Skiing. Snowboarding. Telemark.
Powder. Racing. Touring.
Backcountry, resort, heli.
Quads, hams, glutes.
Perhaps this isn’t your normal train of thought when you think of your favorite winter activities, but if you want to start your season off strong (without sore or tired legs) and reduce your chances of injury, consider this pre-season conditioning program.
I just read on WildSnow.com about a young snowboarder who died in an avalanche this past Sunday in Colorado’s Berthoud Pass. He was not prepared at all. He headed out for a ride without any safety gear. The article claims that safety gear probably would not have saved him. This mentality of early season skiing was the problem in the first place.
Felicia Ennis, with Bella Treks, just emailed to inform me of the Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival. This festival takes place from November 16-20th in Titusville, Florida. Though birding may not be what you would consider an adventure sport, I feel differently. How many times have you stopped hiking, biking, or climbing to notice a hawk or an eagle flying overhead?
This is the sentence you pray for on the avalanche report every morning all winter long. The snow is piling up and the excitement to hit the slopes is rising rapidly. The ski gear is out and ready for those first turns of the season. BUT…today I bowed out on turns to take the dogs for a slog through this new snow. Many others in Jackson were not so patient.
Is telemark skiing, backcountry skiing, or ice climbing on your agenda for this winter? If so, I am sure you have started thinking about your plans for new gear and activities. I want to welcome two new camp/clinics to our growing directory. These women’s specific ski and climbing camps will allow you to hone in and improve on your winter skills while enjoying an all women environment. Go learn how to ski/climb like a girl!
