As I was working in my office this morning I caught a program on NPR (Wyoming Public Radio) that really blew me away. The StoryCorps series is a national project that inspires people to record each others’ stories in sound. These stories are archived and available on NPR to hear. This project hopes to catch moments and emotions through voice over time and preserve them for future generations.
We’ve modeled StoryCorps—in spirit and in scope—after the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the 1930s, through which oral-history interviews with everyday Americans across the country were recorded. These recordings remain the single most important collection of American voices gathered to date. We hope that StoryCorps will build and expand on that work, becoming a WPA for the 21st Century.
The piece I listened to this morning was called When a Low Point Becomes a Turning Point, voices of a married couple speaking of the happiest and the worst day of Shasti O’Leary-Soudant’s life. She was enduring Chemo for Hodgkins disease and a simple joke from her husband during a moment of complete sickness became a turning point in their lives. It made me realize for starters how lucky I am to be in such a loving relationship and secondly how important turning points become. Humilty and accepting help under dire circumstance is difficult for many people. It sometime takes these moments of surrender for turning points to occur.
This was a beautiful piece and I hope you will all take the time to listen to it. If you are interested in getting your story recorded please check out the StoryCorps webpage for more information.
